Taqueria Guadalajara

My friend started a supper club this year, in that, every month, she chooses a restaurant in the area and invites friends from her various walks of life to have dinner together.  It's a fun way to meet new people and try new places.

This past month she chose a Mexican restaurant in Winchester, VA.  Taqueria Guadalajara is located at 1181 Front Royal Pike or, for locals, south on 522 past Costco and the Holiday Inn on the left.  It's nestled in a quasi residential area. The menu is very affordable-I think the most expensive entree was $12.  The drink menu is quite extensive, offering mixed drinks as well as wine and beer. There is a nice little bar as you enter the establishment.

While we were waiting to order, the server brought us an interesting basket of chips and salsa.

The chips were multi colored, very crispy and very good.  The salsa was good too-a little on the spicy side, fair warning.

We all ordered drinks.  My friend ordered sangria which was very fruity and very good.  There were various flavors of margaritas on the menu.  One of our diners ordered blackberry.  I ordered hibiscus flavor.  It tasted sort of berry-like. They garnished it with a cinnamon stick, which I thought was interesting.  I had two of them; they were $7. What I really liked was that the drink was not mostly ice and a little bit of liquor; quite the opposite. Very good value for the money.

The menu was small, but had a lot of choices.  You could get a little pot of homemade guacamole added to an order. I believe it cost $10. Very chunky and very good. In the middle of the menu they listed the variety of proteins available for the different entrees.  Everything from marinated chicken to beef tongue, seafood options, and vegetarian options as well. My friend got 3 tacos stuffed with three different proteins. Two of our diners got quesadillas which were quite large. Another of our diners order something called Dos Gatos, which was a burrito covered in green sauce, and that was massive. I opted for the tamales, which were quite good. Most of the entrees came with rice, which was tasty. If you are fussy about having too many ingredients in your Mexican rice (like my husband), fear not-I think I found two tiny peas in my rice.
There's even dessert! They offered us flan and chocolate flan-one diner opted for the chocolate version and another got a chocolate cakelike dessert. Both of them ended up taking most of dessert home.

Service was good, especially for a larger party. A couple of times they forgot something we asked for but when reminded brought the item out promptly. When asked for recommendations, our server was happy to help us. The restaurant was pretty full for a Wednesday evening, a good sign.

If you are looking for a different option for Mexican food in the Winchester, VA area, I highly recommend making the drive out for this little gem.
